This course addresses the philosophical and political issues pertinent to a selection of literary works about ideal and hellish societies. Readings include Thomas More's Utopia, William Morris's News from Nowhere, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, and Ursula K. LeGuin's The Dispossessed. An overnight study trip to London's British Film Institute for screenings of related works of cinema is included.
