Frequently Asked Questions from Instructors:

  1. I created a course in Gradescope and now the Blackboard Roster cannot sync. What should I do?

Answer:  There may be a couple things going wrong. First, Do NOT login directly to Gradescope.com. Instead always use your Blackboard course site as a "port of entry" to first create a new Gradescope Course site associated with your Blackboard course site. This can be done by adding a new Gradescope Assignment link (can be added anywhere in the course site), Find: Build Content (header bar) > select Gradescope Assignment. When you do this the first time, you'll be asked to either create a new course or link to an existing one. Generally you only need to do this once, the very first time you're creating a new Gradescope course for a new semester. Once this link to Gradescope and Bb is made, you can sync the roster.

Second is you may have a mismatch between your Blackboard email of record and your NetID email of record. They can vary if you have a "vanity email address" assigned to you by your dept. affiliation. Hajim School and some Science depts. have this frequently. In a case where you have two different email addresses, you will need to merge the email IDs on Gradescope before you can proceed further. Gradescope has written up these directions for: .
  2. Can you tell me about the student experience for Gradescope? Are there videos or resources that show what things are like for students?

Answer:  Yes, we have a video here that goes over all student workflows on Gradescope. The video has chapters so that you can jump around to see various parts of the workflow:

You may also find it helpful to read through our student help center here:

  3. When an instructor enrolls a student in a course via Blackboard import, how is that student notified?

Answer: When the instructor syncs the roster from Blackboard to Gradescope, they'll have an option to send an email notification to all imported students.

    email notification
gradescope email notification check box setting

If you, the instructor, check this box, all students will receive an email with instructions for accessing Gradescope. If you don't check the box, students won't be notified, and the instructor will be able to send out the notification email later, once they're ready to publish grades for the first assignment.

  4. What do students see when an item is graded? How do they see feedback?

Answer: Take a look at timestamp #9:38 in the student workflow video linked above, and also at this part of the student help center:

  5. Do students need to create a Gradescope account or is this all linked with Blackboard?

Answer: All linked through the link you create in Blackboard course site. Gradescope accounts are automatically created for each student when the instructor syncs the roster with Blackboard. So students do not need to individually register for accounts. As long as you provide students access to the Gradescope link tool in your Bb course site, and tell students where it is, and instruct them to click on it, everything will work smoothly.
