Placement by Examination
To ensure your success in your coursework, the College can use your scores from select secondary school exams and University department-administered placement exams to help determine the proper level course in which to register.
Select secondary school examinations
The College allows you to use Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Program examination scores for placement in more advanced courses in a subject area. Use the buttons below to view credit and placement charts for both exams:

Placement notes
- If you have not previously studied computer science, you should review the course descriptions for CSC 161 and CSC 171 on the . Both courses offer an introduction to programming.
- If you received any of the following exam scores, you do not need to take the placement exam. Instead, you should register for CSC 172:
- 4 or 5 on the AP Computer Science A exam
- 5+ score on the IB Computer Science exam
- A on the A-Level Computer Science exam
- If you are self-taught and interested in registering for CSC 172, you must first pass the computer science placement exam (instructions below) with an 80 percent or higher score.
Instructions
- Log into your Blackboard account.
- Navigate to the organization with ÂÒÂ×Ç¿¼é Ready in the title, under My Organizations.
- Select Computer Science Placement Exam in the side menu.
- Read through exam introduction.
- Click the underlined Computer Science Placement Exam text.
- Read the instructions and click Begin to start the exam.
Note: The computer science placement exam is only available to incoming students.

Placement notes
When determining the right language course level for you, the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures advisors rely on:
- The results of the placement exams administered by the department
- Advanced Placement (AP) examination scores or International Baccalaureate (IB) rankings that you have submitted
- Information on how you learned the language(s) that you know (e.g., at home, in school, how long you have been speaking or learning the language, etc.)
If you plan to continue with a language you have previously studied: you are required to first take a placement exam. (This applies throughout all of your semesters at ÂÒÂ×Ç¿¼é.) Your official placement may be different than your expectations, so we encourage you to take the placement exam as early as possible in order to accurately plan your future course selections.
If you want to take a language you've never studied and do not speak: a placement test is not needed. Simply enroll in any 101 section of that language.

Placement instructions by language
Chinese: Complete the , which will evaluate your reading only. You will then need to meet with Chinese Placement Advisor Ping Pian to evaluate your listening and speaking skills. If you have questions, you may contact Professor Pian at ping.pian@rochester.edu.

Placement notes
If you are interested in registering for a music theory course, you should take the music theory placement exam on Blackboard (instructions below). Results will guide you to appropriate placement into MUSC 110 or MUSC 111. If you received a score of 4 or 5 on the Music Theory AP exam, you do not need to take the placement exam and can instead register directly for MUSC 111.

- Log into your Blackboard account.
- Navigate back to this screen and use the button below to enter the placement test.
- Click the Submit button to proceed into the test questions.

The writing self-placement survey is designed to help you determine what writing course is the best option for you to fulfill your primary writing requirement. While the survey is meant to help you make an informed decision, the results are only a suggestion. Ultimately, you can choose which writing course best suits your needs and interests.

- Navigate to the organization with ÂÒÂ×Ç¿¼é Ready in the title under My Organizations.
- Select Writing Self-Placement Survey in the side menu.
- Read through the survey instructions.
- Click Section I: Writing History and Experience.
