Major Declaration
Declaring a Major in Arts and Sciences
- Review the information online at the department’s website for the major or minor you are considering. Many departments require students to meet with a faculty member or departmental advisor prior to approving the major declaration.
- During your meeting with the academic department, you will review the courses required to complete the major, including how the upper level writing requirement will be fulfilled.
- If you intend to declare a second major or minor, you should also discuss the relevant policies regarding the College’s overlap rules.
- Note that prior to submitting the major declaration form, you will also complete the required information about the primary writing requirement and the completion of your remaining degree requirements.
- Students who intend to complete a dual degree program (e.g., a BA and a BS degree two BS degrees, or a dual degree with the Eastman School of Music) should be aware that the requirements for both degrees must be fulfilled.
- Degree requirements and College policies can be complex. Students with questions should consult with an advisor in the College Center for Advising Services if they have any questions about majors, minors, clusters, and other degree requirements.
- Complete and submit the online major declaration form available under Registrar Forms on the forms and other requests page. (Be sure to read the form instructions.)
- Check your email to confirm that the major declaration form was received and approved.
