Students, alumni receive national awards for global study, teaching, and research
Students and alumni at the ÂÒÂ×Ç¿¼é made a big impression—and a bit of history—as merit-based national awards were bestowed during the 2022–23 academic year. Highlights include the first Truman Scholar since 2004 and four Goldwater Scholars, an institutional record.
The awards are based on academic success, research endeavors, and community contributions through leadership and service and will send students and alumni across the globe. This year’s recipients include a Truman Scholar—the University’s first in 19 years to receive the premier scholarship for public service—and four Goldwater Scholars, the highest number in any single year from ÂÒÂ×Ç¿¼é to receive the prestigious award for US citizens planning research careers in STEM fields.

Astronaut Visit
The Fellowships Office was thrilled to host a visit from NASA Hall of Fame Astronaut Frederick Gregory. Colonel Gregory, the first Black astronaut to command the space shuttle, came to congratulate senior biochemistry major Loren Cardani on being awarded the Astronaut Scholarship. During his visit, he delivered a public lecture on “Future Space Adventures” and visited the Laboratory for Laser Energetics. But for many of us, the highlight of his visit was watching Colonel Gregory connect with our students.
For nearly two hours, he spoke directly with students, faculty, staff, and special visitors (including local high school students). We even had a surprise guest, ÂÒÂ×Ç¿¼é alum Josh Cassada '00 PhD, deliver a message from Earth's orbit on the International Space Station. It’s no exaggeration to say that this experience was out of this world!
