Introduction to College Teaching

Introduction to College Teaching is designed to provide graduate student and postdoctoral instructors with the tools and skills they need to successfully design and teach a summer course.

By the end of the four-week program, they will have:

  • Created course materials, including a course syllabus with measurable learning outcomes
  • Designed classroom activities and assignments that facilitate students learning
  • Developed classroom management skills, such as facilitating discussion

The program is open to all graduate and postdoctoral instructors but is specifically designed for those teaching as instructor of record for the first time during summer semester.

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Apply backward design principles to develop and align outcomes, assignments, and teaching strategies in their course and module design
  • Use relationship-centered framework to manage and facilitate engaging learning experiences in classroom settings
  • Develop accessible instructional materials to engage all students inclusively and equitably in the learning process

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to enroll in this program, you must be:

  • Enrolled as a graduate student or employed by the University as a postdoc in Arts, Sciences & Engineering (AS&E) and/or
  • Registered as instructor of record in an AS&E summer semester course

Upcoming Sessions

Introduction to College Teaching will meet 4 times from 3:00 - 6:00 pm on:

  • March 21, 2024
  • April 4, 2024
  • April 18, 2024
  • May 2, 2024

Each session will be held in Douglass Commons room 401.
