Become a Tutor

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Learning Center tutor. Applications will be accepted between October 1 and November 10, 2024 for the spring semester.

Is Becoming a Tutor Right for You?

You should apply to be a tutor only if you have an overall ÂÒÂ×Ç¿¼é GPA of 3.0 or higher, you feel academically confident in the courses you wish to tutor, you are able to enroll at the start of next semester in the one-credit Tutor Training course which meets one hour per week with work outside of class, you have a faculty member or TA you feel comfortable reaching out to for a recommendation, and if you are willing to keep excellent records of your tutoring sessions and hours worked.

Do you have a 3.0 overall GPA here at the ÂÒÂ×Ç¿¼é? If not, you will need to take some time to build up your GPA and focus on your academic goals. If you do, becoming a tutor may be a good fit.

Do you feel academically confident in the courses you want to tutor? If not, we would recommend not applying to be a tutor. If you do, then becoming a tutor may be a good fit.

Are you willing and available to enroll in a one-credit Tutor Training course at the start of next semester (meeting one hour a week with some work outside of class*)? If not, we would recommend not applying to be a tutor. If you do, then becoming a tutor may be a good fit.

Is there a faculty member or TA you feel comfortable reaching out to for a recommendation (required)? If not, we would recommend connecting and working with faculty in the future to create a network for professional and academic support. If you do, then becoming a tutor may be a good fit.

Are you willing to keep excellent records of your tutoring sessions and the hours you work? If you’ve answered yes to this question and the questions above, then you should apply to become a Learning Center tutor! Proceed to step two of the application process.

We will be unable to hire any students located internationally, so please take that into consideration when applying. Also note that preference will be given to applicants who will be located in/local to ÂÒÂ×Ç¿¼é, NY during the fall 2023 semester. Other applicants will be considered but only eligible for hire upon administrative approval.

*Please make sure that you will be available for one of the CASC 312 course on Fridays at 11:25 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. or 2 - 2:50 p.m. This course is required for all new tutors.

Selection Process

The Learning Center makes tutor selections based on subject demand. While we hire an array of tutors for different subjects, chemistry, biology, data science, computer science, physics, engineering, economics, and math are all high demand subjects and therefore make for desirable applicants. The Learning Center will notify you before the end of the semester regarding an interview or to let you know the positions have been filled. Please feel free to apply again next semester if you are not chosen during this round of hiring.
